After 10 years of debate, the law regulating the national carbon market was sanctioned on December 12th. The law is a milestone in Brazil's progress towards a low-carbon economy and demonstrates its commitment to international climate agreements, especially considering that the World Climate Conference will be hosted in the country in 2025.

COP29 in Focus - Highlights and Preparations for COP30 in Brazil
The 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) took place from 11th to the 22nd of November in Baku, Azerbaijan, with final negotiations continuing until Sunday the 24th.
The debates over the days addressed crucial issues, such as the regulation of a global carbon market, climate finance, as well as the implementation of adaptation measures, expansion of mitigation commitments, among others. With an eye on the future, the spotlight is already turning to COP30, which will be held in Brazil, in Belém in the state of Pará, in 2025.

COP16 BIODIVERSITY
The 16th United Nations Conference on Biodiversity (COP16) began on Monday, October 21st, and continued until November 1st, 2024 in Cali, Colombia, representing a crucial moment for the review of global environmental policies. Colombia, the host of the event, had as one of the country's objectives for this COP that it be recognized globally as the "people's COP", in which citizens, Afro-descendant and campesino communities, indigenous peoples, scientists, social actors and all sectors would be heard and have broad participation in the discussions, as stated by the president of COP16 and Minister of the Environment of Colombia, Susana Muhamad.

TOWARDS COP29
The 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) will take place from November 11th to the 24th in Baku, Azerbaijan. This year’s edition will resume discussions from COP28, which concluded with an agreement on the Global Stocktake (GST), which concerns the process that examines how countries are meeting their climate change targets, as defined by the Paris Agreement; and will focus on climate finance. The aim will be to create a New Quantified Collective Target (NCQG), last set in 2009 and which agreed that developed countries would provide US$100 billion per year, by 2020, to help developing countries mitigate and adapt to climate change, a target that was only achieved in 2022.

RECAPING THE FIRST MONTHS AND ANTICIPATING THE UPCOMING CHALLENGES OF 2024

OLYMPICS - PARIS 2024
On July 10th, the Sports Committee of the Chamber of Deputies organized a "Towards the Olympics - Paris 2024" Breakfast in the Main Hall. The event, hosted by sports journalist Álvaro José, highlighted the start of the Paris 2024 Olympics, which begins on July 26th. The event was broadcasted on the Chamber of Deputies' YouTube channel.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM
The 54th World Economic Forum took place in Davos, Switzerland, from January 15th to the 19th. Founded in 1971, the World Economic Forum aims to bring together global leaders from diverse spheres, such as business, politics, academia and civil society, to discuss and collaborate on critical issues for the global economy.

COP28: PROGRESS AND NEGOTIATIONS
The 28th Conference of the Parties, held annually by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, took place in December 2023. COP28 was the largest of those held to date, with almost 100,000 people attending the event. Among the various countries that took part in the Conference, Brazil stood out with the largest delegation.

Between February and March, the Chamber of Deputies and the Federal Senate of Brazil swore in their elected members, inaugurating the 57th Legislature (2023-2026), and defined the presidencies of their permanent committees. Thus, the National Congress begins its activities for another 4-year term with an extensive agenda of proposals of interest to society under consideration and expectations of approving the necessary measures to overcome obstacles that hinder the country's growth.
